Finding a career path is not easy to do. There are hundreds of careers to choose between and often students just do not know enough about what they want to do with their lives in high school to select one career path. However, high school students often have a field or area of interest that they want to pursue. If a student is interested in pursuing a biology degree in college then they will need to start preparing for this career path in high school.

#1 Take Four Years of Science in High School

Regardless of what degree program students want to take in college, if they are planning to attend college then it is in their best interest to take four years of science in high school. The courses that are offered are going to vary depending on the high school, but they will usually include biology, biology II, chemistry, physics, earth science and geology. Students need to take the courses that they are the most interested in.

#2 Take Two Years of Biology in High School

Students that intend to pursue a biology degree in college need to take two years of biology. Biology I is usually taken by freshman in high school. This is an introductory course that basically summarizes all of the information that students have learned in grade school and middle school about biology topics. Biology II is an intermediate course that expands upon basic biology concepts. This class usually involves more field trips and lab assignments than Biology I.

#3 Learn to Write Academic Essays

Writing is going to be a big part of a biology degree program. Academic essay writing is much different from creative or other forms of essay writing that students do in high school. Learning how to write up an academic research report is going to give students a huge advantage when they get to college. Students will need to learn about how to compose each section of report. This can be done by reading reports written by other students and researchers, which can be found in peer reviewed science journals.

#4 Practice Your Lab Skills

College degree programs in biology are going to require a lot of time spent in the laboratory. Students need to be comfortable working in a lab and conducting research that may involve dissecting plants and animals. If you have a weak stomach do not worry. You will develop a tolerance to the gross things in a biology lab over time.

#5 Develop Independent Interests in Biology

When college admission boards look at student applications they are going to look for good grades as well as at what the student has done outside of school. If you are interested in a good biology program you will need to prove that you have the ability and interest to complete this degree program successfully.

There are several ways to develop independent interests in biology outside of school. You can conduct independent research, you can enter science fairs and you can enter science essay contests.By: M.
